Despite a record capacity of more than 34,200 places, the Fedasil network is saturated. Fedasil does not have enough places to directly accommodate every person who applies for asylum in Belgium. In the absence of places in the regular reception network, several families of asylum seekers have been sent to youth hostels since 12 September.

In 2023, Fedasil continues to benefit from a support of the European agency EUAA (containers, supply of staff and interpreters).

Since 2022, Fedasil has been benefiting from the temporary support of the EUAA (European agency for asylum - formerly EASO) in the form of an operational plan to increase the capacity and the quality of reception.

Last year, Fedasil assisted 2,673 persons who decided to return to their country of origin.

Voluntary returns from Belgium seem to be picking up after a few difficult years due to the coronavirus. The number of returns increased by 10% compared to 2019, and by 36% compared to 2021.

Due to the saturation of the reception network of Fedasil, only 71 refugees could be resettled last year in Belgium.

In 2022, 71 refugees were resettled in Belgium, mainly Syrians from Jordan, Egypt or Lebanon. This figure is not in line with the objectives set at the beginning of last year by our country.

Every day, for over a year, asylum seekers have been finding themselves on the streets because of a lack of sufficient places.

On Thursday 6 October, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) came to Belgium for a visit. In the context of the consultation between IOM and Belgium, the Director General paid a working visit to the Fedasil return desk in Brussels, in the presence of the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor. He talked, among others, to several return counsellors.

Fedasil is facing a lack of places for the reception of asylum seekers.

News | A reception network under pressure

While the number of asylum applications is on the rise in Belgium as in other European countries, the situation in front of the arrival centre in Brussels is getting worse by the day. Some 100 isolated men are currently camped out in front of the 'Petit-Château' in the hope of receiving a place in the reception network. As a reminder, Fedasil has had to make choices for several months now due to the lack of places, and priority is given to families, UMs and vulnerable people.

The registration centre for Ukrainian refugees is moving this Monday to the 'Heysel' in Brussels.

The new centre at the Heysel, located in Palace 8, will make it possible to significantly increase the registration capacity of the refugees fleeing the conflict in Ukraine. The centre will be open 7 days a week, from 8:30am to 5:30pm.

Belgium has set up a specific path for the registration and the reception of Ukrainian nationals.

Since a few days, many Ukrainian nationals present themselves at the arrival centre of Fedasil – the "Petit-Château" in Brussels. As a result of the conflict, Ukrainians are now entitled to a temporary protection status at European level and don't have to apply for asylum.

More than 20,000 asylum seekers entered Fedasil's reception network in 2021. Almost a third were Afghans.

Last year, the number of asylum applications registered in Belgium returned to the level observed before the health crisis. In 2021, no less than 20,211 applicants were given a place in Fedasil's network. This is an increase of 48% compared to 2020.

Last year, Fedasil helped almost 2,000 people to return to their country.

In 2021, 1,965 people decided to leave Belgium and to return to their country of origin via the assistance programme set up by Fedasil and its partners. This is a slight increase (+6%) compared to the previous year. The returns concern asylum seekers in Belgium, persons whose asylum application was rejected and migrants without a residence permit in our country.
